A photo that was shared by a user on Facebook is apparently an actual photo of a Canadian spy working for the US National Security Agency (NSA) and the UK’s GCHQ.
The photo was uploaded on December 22 by a woman named “Sara”, who claims to be a Canadian.
The photo has since been removed from Facebook and has been removed again, but the original has been archived by a Facebook spokesperson, with the message, “This is a fake.
We cannot verify the authenticity of this photo, however it appears to have been taken by a Canadian.”
According to Sara, she was working for GCHQ, which has an “operational support unit” in Toronto, Canada, and that the photo was taken by her while she was there.
The “S” in GCHQ stands for Canada, which Sara claims to have worked for.
The image, however, was actually taken by an unnamed NSA contractor who worked for the UK government’s GCSB, which is a UK-based spying agency that is a component of the National Security Establishment (NSA).
GCHQ is a British acronym for the British Security Service, a precursor of the NSA.
Sara, who lives in New York City, said that she met Sara in December 2016 while attending a seminar organized by the Toronto-based anti-spying group Anonymous.
“I told her I was going to the UK to be an activist and I was interested in what was happening,” Sara told Motherboard.
“We started to talk about activism and I said to her, ‘I want to work for Anonymous.'”
The two got on well, and she said that Sara has since gotten more involved in anti-intelligence activism.
After working for NSA for two years, Sara said she started working with the UK agency’s foreign intelligence agency GCHQ in June 2017, working on a variety of projects.
She said that GCHQ’s “operations department” at GCSBA in Toronto was the agency that provided her with the photo.
GCHQ was one of the two agencies that worked with Sara to steal the photo, and then posted it online.
Sara said that the NSA’s GIS (Global Information Infrastructure) was also involved in the theft, although the exact nature of their collaboration is unknown.
SARA’S STORY The image was shared with Sara and the caption, “The Canadian spy that was working in the US is here,” which she said shows the Canadian spy in the background, as if he were actually working for a foreign intelligence service.
In a later post, Sara claimed that the image was taken during a “secret program” at NSA called the “Digital Underground” in which the NSA collects communications on the internet, and uses that information to analyze them for the NSA to use in other types of surveillance.
Sara said the NSA did not respond to Motherboard’s request for comment.
GCHQ did not reply to Motherboards’ request for an interview, and GCSBE did not return a request for further comment.
The NSA did respond to questions, however.
In an email to MotherBoard, a spokesperson for the agency said that “GCHQ has never provided a photograph of an NSA employee to anyone outside of the agency.”
